What is Karungali

Karungali is not an ornament. It is the heartwood of the ebony tree — dense as stone, dark as the hour before dawn — worn for generations by those who seek Murugan's grace, courage and a quiet mind.

கருங்காலி — கருமையின் புனிதம்

Why it is worn

Six blessings, one black bead

For centuries, Tamil families have trusted karungali as a companion in faith. This is what our elders say it brings.

  1. 01

    தைரியம்

    Courage

Karungali is traditionally linked with Chevvai (Mars) and Lord Murugan — worn for strength and fearlessness.

  2. 02

    பாதுகாப்பு

    Protection

Long believed to guard the wearer against drishti, the evil eye, and negative energy.

  3. 03

    அமைதி

    Peace

A grounding companion for prayer and meditation, helping the mind settle and slow down.

  4. 04

  5. 05

  6. 06

    நம்பிக்கை

    Faith

Above all, a daily reminder of devotion — held close to the heart, bead by bead.

These are traditional beliefs shared in good faith. Karungali is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment.

The Ebony Tree

௧Chapter 1

The Ebony Tree

கருங்காலி மரம்

Karungali comes from the slow-growing ebony tree. Only mature trees form the deep black heartwood we use.

The Black Heart

௨Chapter 2

The Black Heart

கருமையான வைரம்

Beneath the pale outer wood lies the true karungali — dense enough to sink in water, with a fine natural grain.

Skilled craftsmen shape each bead, then polish it to a soft matte glow. No paint, no dye, no shortcuts.

Strung with Care

௪Chapter 4

Strung with Care

கோர்வை

Beads are matched for size and tone, then strung and knotted one by one around the guru bead.

Blessed in Tradition

௫Chapter 5

Blessed in Tradition

ஆசீர்வாதம்

Before it reaches you, every malai is offered in prayer, so it arrives ready to be worn.

Why 108 beads

One bead for every prayer

108 is the most sacred number in our tradition. Count one chant on each bead and you complete a full round of japa — a circle of devotion that always returns to its start.

27 × 4

Stars and their steps

The 27 nakshatras each have 4 padas — together, 108.

12 × 9

Signs and planets

The 12 rasis meet the 9 grahas in 108 combinations.

1

The guru bead

One larger bead marks the start of the chant. It is never crossed — you turn back and begin again.

Authenticity

Proof, not promises

Fake karungali — painted pine or dyed wood — is everywhere. So our malais are examined by an independent gem testing laboratory, and you receive the report.

  • X-ray scan

Confirms solid ebony wood inside, with no filler or joins.

  • Magnification

Checks the natural grain and that no dye or paint was used.

  • QR verification

Scan the code on your report to check it with the lab.

Questions

Asked by devotees

Anything else on your mind? Message us on WhatsApp — a real person will reply.

Is your karungali 100% natural?

Yes. Our malais are made from natural ebony heartwood and are tested by an independent gem testing laboratory using X-ray and magnification. The lab report confirms natural origin.

How can I check that my karungali is real?

Place a bead in a glass of water — real ebony heartwood is dense and sinks. It should also have a natural matte grain and should not leave black colour on a damp white cloth. You can also scan the QR code on the lab report.

Who can wear a karungali malai?

Anyone — men, women and children. Karungali is traditionally associated with Lord Murugan and Chevvai (Mars), and many people wear it for faith, protection and peace of mind.

Which day is best to start wearing it?

Tuesday (Chevvai's day) is traditionally preferred, but any auspicious morning after prayer is perfect. See the simple ritual on this page.

Can I wear it while bathing or sleeping?

We suggest removing it before bathing, swimming or using soap and perfume, so the natural wood keeps its finish for years.
